In celebration of Rotary's 100 year anniversary the Rotary Clubs of Modesto, Modesto Sunrise, Modesto North, Modesto East, and Modesto Gateway have teamed up with the City of Modesto to develop a quarter mile section of the Virginia Avenue Corridor project that will be know as The Rotary Centennial Junction. The Virginia Avenue Corridor is the name given to an area of land that the Union Pacific Railroad operated as a railroad corridor through Modesto. The tracks have been removed, and in 1999 the Modesto City Council approved utilizing the Rails-To-Trails program, or "Railbanking" the project, using federal legislation to preserve the corridor for transportation use. The Virginia Avenue Corridor will be a 4.2 mile long non-motorized transportation trail and linear park that will run from Bangs Ave south to downtown Modesto. The .25 mile long section know as The Rotary Centennial Junction will be located between Roseburg Avenue and Orangeburg Avenue.
The United Rotary Clubs of Modesto is asking the public for help. Sponsorships are available for benches, picnic tables, a kiosk, bike racks lighting and more. Individual bricks are available engraved with the donor's name for $100.
